The 81mm Mortar is a Battalion level indirect fire weapon which is capable of providing accurate HE, smoke and illuminating rounds out to a maximum range of 5,650m.
Mortar Platoon in mechanized and armoured infantry battalions are mounted in and fire from their Armoured Personnel Carriers, increasing its mobility, and enables rapid disengagement and movement to another site. - Max Range HE: 5,650m

The 81 mm mortar was introduced into the Canadian Armed Forces in 1967 and upgraded to C3 status commencing in 1968. These mortars are issued on the basis of eight per infantry battalion. Total quantity is 160. The latest modification to the mortar is the addition of the BAD (Blast Attenuation Device). This device serves to deflect the muzzle blast upwards rather than level with the end of the tube. The device is cone shaped going from a wide mouth tapering down to the size of the tube, and is threaded onto the end of the tube.
